Selecting Polyurethane Foam Shoulder Padding
Compare density, thickness and edge transition when considering polyurethane foam pads for jackets.
Why use foam?
Polyurethane foam can be cut to a selected shape, making it one of the materials considered for shoulder support. The material name alone does not tell you how soft or durable a particular pad will be. Cell structure, density and geometry vary between products.
Thickness and edges
An abrupt edge showing through the outer fabric can leave an unwanted line on the shoulder. Place the sample at the shoulder tip and around the armhole to assess the thickness transition. Judge the fit in a tried-on garment rather than only on a flat table.
Sample checks
If stretch, recovery or appearance after care matter, test under the intended conditions. Specify the cut dimensions, target shoulder shape and any covering requirement when requesting options from Arven Vatka.
Is density enough?
Two foams with a similar density can differ in firmness and recovery. Read the specification alongside actual thickness and behaviour on the shoulder. Run the sample through the intended garment handling steps and check whether the edge, surface or stitching area changes. Make this assessment with the fabric planned for production.
